Habitat for Humanity

Messiah is part of the Greece Coalition of Churches that attempts to build a Habitat house every two or three years in Rochester. Our support involves fund raising; such as the Kelly's pie sale at Thanksgiving, the ink-jet recycling bin located outside the Fellowship Hall and the St Pauly Clothes shed located at Greece UMC on Maiden Ln. During the active building time, we recruit volunteers to build the house.

Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical, national organization whose goal is to eliminate substandard housing. The Rochester affiliate (Flower City Habitat for Humanity) has built more than 100 homes since the mid 1980's. Messiah has participated in four homes over the past several years; most recently three homes have been built in conjunction with the Greece Churches Habitat Coalition.

Volunteers are needed to help plan the fund raising activities, to work on the golf tournament, and to construct the house. No special skills are needed, as volunteers are trained on any activity they are asked to do. If you cannot perform an activity, you can ask for another assignment. All that is needed to help build the home is a willing heart and a desire to help! Volunteers working on the construction site must, by New York state law, be 18 years old or older, but younger volunteers can sometimes be used on non-construction activities.
